Hookable Series to Watch: Orphan Black and Bates Motel

There are so many shows out there to watch these days. Like, so many others I have managed to skip around from one streaming service to another. So here are a couple of good long series to watch.

Orphan Black (5 Seasons): I saw this on Amazon Prime. It's about a woman (Sarah Manning) who discovers she is a clone, and she is one of many. All the clones were born and raised by different families. An organization called Neolution did the cloning and it's an ongoing illegal experiment. They have people who are close to the clones reporting to Neolution about their lives. For example: Their own husbands or boyfriends. However, Sarah Manning fell off their radar and is not being watched by anyone. Of course, Neolution doesn't want the clones finding out about each other, but guess what? They end up finding each other.

Each clone has a different personality too and they even are made to look different, but amazingly all of the clones are played by the same actress: Tatiana Maslany. The main character/clone (Sarah Manning) is a bit of a criminal. Then you have a scientist, a soccer mom, a detective, and an assassin named Helana who has been brain washed to kill the other clones. Then there is Rachel who works for Neolution. She has known from the beginning that she is a clone. Although this show is considered science fiction, it's more of a suspense because it doesn't get into the science involved in cloning. When the series was over, I wondered if there would ever be a spin off series because Sarah Manning had a child who seemed to have some special abilities. I've also read that Maslany is going to be in Disney's "She Hulk."

Bates Motel (5 Seasons): I wasn't sure if this would be my thing. I'm not big on the horror genre. However, I found "Bates Motel" to be more of a psychological suspense than horror. I watched it on Netflix and ended up liking Bates Motel. This is the story of a young Norman Bates and his mother, Norma. Along with his brother Dylan. The story starts out when Norma has just bought an old house and the motel near it in a weird little town. She wants to make it a success, but sadly the two of them are just so messed up.

It's about how Norman turns into a killer and how his mother tries to cope with it. She behaves oddly around him, and sometimes treats him more like a boyfriend than a son. Deep down, she knows the truth about him, but chooses to be in denial and tries to protect him. It's also about the abuse Norma and Norman endured that caused his split personality to evolve. His brother Dylan is the most normal of the three. However, he has been estranged from his mother. He joins the town's business (growing marijuana) because he desperately needs a job. Unlike Norman, his mother doesn't seem to even like Dylan, and that is a good thing. The town adds interest to the story because it's like a small dystopia.

  1. I might watch Orphan Black at some point. It sounds like the Clone Wars series where even though they were all cloned from Jango Fett the clone soldiers developed different personalities.
