Curing Cancer with the Polio Virus

Recently while watching 60 minutes, they had an amazing story about how they are experimenting with the polio virus to kill glioblastoma (brain cancer.) How can they use polio? Won’t the patient eventually be paralyzed? There is no need to worry because they have modified the polio virus rendering it much less harmful.

The virus is then injected into the tumor of the patient. This triggers the immune system to attack the tumor. At first, the tumor expands from inflammation. This made it look like the tumor was getting worse. However, inflammation is a response from the immune system. Then the tumor began to shrink. In some cases, the patient was cured and they are continuing with the experimental phase.

I find this to be amazing. Read more here.

Much better than surgery, that's for sure.

That's neat to cure a disease with a disease.
